Wood family of Oldbury and West Bromwich
« on: Friday 19 November 04 09:50 GMT (UK) »
I've reached a couple of proverbial "brickwalls" with my great grandfather William Wood, born around 1832 Alveley Shropshire, who settled in Oldbury Worcs, became a cordwainer or bootmaker, and died there 4 Feb. 1898. He married Matilda Wright b. West Bromwich 4 Dec. 1845 on 28 Nov. 1864 at Christ Church, West Bromwich. The first "brickwall" is his first wife: he was a widower when he married Matilda, and he had a son William by her in about 1863 at "Ditch Green, Staffs" (one of the later censuses). Who was she? Where was he / they living in 1841, 1851, 1861? West Bromwich? The second brickwall is what happened to Matilda Wood after he died. She was still a widow in Oldbury in 1901 but no record thereafter, I've looked everywhere. Matilda was the daughter of William Wright b. about 1809 West Bromwich and Mary Pool, I've not been able to trace the Wrights there either! I'm be most grateful for any help you can give. Den.
