SMEDLEY MARRIOTT - Peterborough -confusion

I was researching part of my family when I came across an anomaly and perhaps someone may have an explanation.

A Joseph Baker bn 1869 Peterborough married a Sarah Elizabeth Smedley in 1893.

Through the censuses I have traced Sarah's parents as Millicent and Charles.  However when I came to look for their marriage the only one I can find is Charles Smedley Marriott and Millicent Hunt in 1861 which fits with births of their children.  The censuses yielded Charles's mother as Elizabeth (Smedley).  I have also traced a possible father for Charles - William Smedley Marriott whose wife was Elizabeth.

When I tried to find the childrens' dates of birth for both generations I found no records under Smedley but most of them under Marriott (or Smedley Marriott).

Is this an unusual scenario or did some families have multiple choices for surnames!!?

I have only just read your post.  I have this family in my tree.

My 2xGt Aunt, Sarah Elizabeth Harbour (1875-1949), of Peterborough married Edward Smedley, (1874-1957), in 1898.   
Charles's Mother was Elizabeth Desborough, (1816-1859).  She married William Smedley Marriott in May 1836, by Banns at Peterborough St. John.    The 1841 Census shows he was not from the County - of Northamptonshire.
