Kettins Parish..Is that in Perth??
« on: Wednesday 17 January 07 02:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Was Kettins Parish in Perth in 1800's.
If so could some help me find date of birth of Robert McLauchlan around 1804 who married Jean Milne. (may have been 2nd marriage) He died at Coupar Angus. He may have had a brother Thomas McLauchlan who married a Helen ??.

Also there was a Robert McLauchlan ( may be the same one as above) who married Margaret Taylor..they had a large family including a William born about 1828.

I  believe they lived in Hillyland in Tibbermore parish in 1841.

Also in 1831 another McLauchlan family John who had married Marjery (Mey) Milne/Mills  were living in Hillyland. Hoping they are siblings.

Thank you,
Tiffaney

Kettins is actually in Angus (formerly known as Forfar).  I'll move the post to that board for you.  :)

Both Kettins and Coupar Angus were split across the county boundary between Perthshire and Angus (Forfarshire). That was the case until 1891 or 1892 when the effects of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 took place. The Boundary Commission set up following the Act had the job of redrawing parish and county boundaries so that parishes were all wholly in one county.

To quote from the Statistical Account of Scotland of 1834-45 - Parish of Kettins

Extent and Situation - Part of the parish is situated in Perthshire, but the greater part in the western district of Forfarshire, on the south side of the valley of Strathmore, and on the northern declivity o the Sidlaw hills. The length from east to west is 4 miles and from north to south is 3, exclusive of Bandirran, which is detached.

Kettins' records were always indexed as Angus (Forfarshire). Coupar Angus was listed as Angus until 1892, and Perthshire from 1893 onwards.

So technically, on census forms or the like, it could be right for a birthplace for either of these parishes to be given as Perthshire or Angus (Forfarshire).

Hillyland, Tibbermore was well within Perthshire - away from the county boundary. It was a short distance to the north-west of Perth. On a modern map, you can see it is now within the built up area of the city of Perth.

Thanks again ADP...now you have confirmed Hillyland was indeed in Perthshire will leave my message re Robert & John McLauchlan there.
Must get a decent early map. Would you know how far Dunbeath & Cargill were from one another & also Coupar Angus.
Cheers Tiff.

Angus (formerly known as Forfar).

At the risk of being pedantic, and in the hope of preventing possible future confusion, may I please point out that Angus was formerly known as Forfarshire or The County of Forfar.

Forfar on its own is the name of the county town and its surrounding parish.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
