James O'Dowd born 1780 Monahan, Ireland
« on: Saturday 20 January 07 20:36 GMT (UK) »
My father-in-law's relations came from Sligo, Monahan, Ireland to Quebec, Canada in 1840.

The first O'Dowd was James born about 1780 in Monahan.  His two children were Richard born about 1805 in Sligo, Monahan and Thomas born October 31, 1817.

Richard married Mary Summerville who was born about 1805 also.  Five of their children were born in Monahan, Richard in 1832, Jane May 10, 1831, Margaret, Elizabeth January 22, 1825 and Mary Ann born about 1837.

They left for Canada about 1842 and their last child Robert was born May 1, 1843 in Cushing Quebec.

Somewhere between Ireland and Canada they dropped the O from O'Dowd and became Dowd.

If anyone has any information on this family or information which would help in my search please let me know.

Thank you

Hi!

I am a direct descendent of a James O'Dowd born 1805 in County Sligo, Ireland who married Marry Summerville.  According to my records they had 5 children Richard, Jame, Robert James, Margaret and Elizabeth.  If these records are correct, I hail from the Robert James line.  Robert was born in cushing, Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada.  He married Eliza Bigelow 1872.  they are both buried in St. Mongoes Cemetery in Cushing, Quebec, Canada.  Robert had 3 sons - Joseph, Lemuel, and Robert.  All 3 born in Argenteuil County, Quebec, Canada.  Joseph was my great-grandfather.  He married JoAnna Townsend and they subsequently farmed around Kenora, Ontario, Canada.  They had 2 children:  Irene and Lawrence.  Lawrence was my grandfather who married Gertrude Maude Alcock and had 2 sons:  Merwin William and Ralph Lawrence.  Merwin was my father.  He married Dorothy Mary Simmons.  they had 1 daughter (me) Diane and 1 son, Kenneth.  I changed my name from Diane to Lee and took my mother's maiden name after my divorce.  I have one son, Kristopher Boyd and he has one son Leif Boyd.

I hope to hear from you sometime in the future, cousin.  write me:   (*)

Hi Lee

Do you know how hard it has been to contact you?  I have tried numerous times but every email has been returned.  My husband's father was Ernest Lemuel Dowd and his father was Lemuel Herbert Dowd, son of Robert James Dowd who married Eliza Bigelow.

Contact me....email is (*)

Hi Marg

Sorry for all the confusion - I changed my email address a few years ago after moving.  It's almost impossible to remember or change email addresses on genealogy sites I have found.  Rootsweb seems completely revamped.  Anyways, we are in touch now, thank goodness.

I found your posting here by doing an internet google search for James O'Dowd.

Best Regards

I am looking for INFORMATION for Mary O'Dowd who married George West. I found he may have been born 1806. He died May 3 1878. He was the village sexton for Tubbercurry.
Some other info sent to me suggested the name was not Mary but was Alice?  I would be most grateful for any information on this couple. I know they had a son William Dowd West born about 1832. Are there any records at all that are available? Old church book for St, George's in Tubbercurry. Would there be pictures of the grave for the above couple? Any records for info on their son William. Anything at all  would be appreciate.
thank you

Hi Malla

I am sorry I can't be of help.  I don't have a Mary O'Dowd in my family file, nor do I have the last name of West.
