Did I dream up an imaginary family?
« on: Tuesday 23 January 07 10:42 GMT (UK) »
I feel really stupid.

A couple of nights ago I was fiddling around with the 1881 census on familysearch and free bmd. Now, it was very late and I was very tired. I found a couple of familiar family names, listed as living together. I was pleased and thought I'd hit a minor jackpot as I don't know much about this family yet.

I thought, although the ages didn't fit with anyone specific I'm looking for, the family names, especially together, certainly were of interest. I thought, "Better print that out". Then I thought, "No, the printer noise might wake up the family - I can easily find them tomorrow and print it out then". Can't be too hard, only a few entires for the particular name had come up.

WRONG! Disaster! Now I can't find them!

I've spent hours trying to find these families today. As I said, I was sleepy and can't even remember the name of the person I entered in the search. Perhaps I typed a name in error and accidentally found these families? Well, what an idiot!

So, my question is this: Is there a way to search for two surnames who were living at the same address?

Even stupider, the thing is, I'm pretty sure I found them on the familysearch 1881 census, but it just MAY have been 1891 or 1881 freecen.

And even more stupidly I can't remember the name of the head of household - think I'm losing my mind! Perhaps it was a dream! I WAS dozing in my chair!

Anyhow the surnames I found are Bird and Griffiths - they were in the same household in Liverpool. Possible given names I searched were George, Thomas and Mary Jane and possibly any combination thereof. I might have entered the wrong forename with the wrong surname.

Unless I WAS dreaming I think the Griffiths were from Wales (Wrexham?). I remember thinking, "Just as I suspected"!

I must have looked through hundreds and hundreds of names today, and I AM beginning to think it was a dream or that I am going mad!

How can I ever find them?

I have had a look at the other threads related to the Bird and Griffiths thread, but I have found it hard to follow.

Do you have either of George Bird or Mary Jane Griffith year of birth or where either of them were born?

Have you found either of them in the earlier census before Georgina was born?

Hi Wendy, thanks for your interest. Yes, it's a bit of a mess at the moment.

I am currently waiting for the marriage certificate of George Bird and Mary Jane Griffiths (hopefully it will be the right one!). I do know as a fact (from a relative) that George and Mary Jane are Georgina's parents. This marriage took place in Liverpool.

As yet I do not have either of these people on any census either before Georgina or with Georgina, nor do I have their birth dates. I was going to see what the birth certificate reveals and perhaps request further assistance then if necessary.

I looked again today for this imaginary census, but can't see it. Definitely a dream!

HI Ruskie

Glad you found your "imaginary" family.

Are you still wanting some help though with the searching for the family?

Thanks very much Wendy - I thought I was going mad there for a while.

I have progressed quite well with Mary Jane's maternal family - lots of census info.

I still have nothing more about the Bird family.  There was a theory on one of the other threads about this family, that Georgina's father was James rather than George. There is a family on the 1901 census with a 10 year old Georgina (the only one in the area) which seems a good match except for the father's name of James rather than George.

Perhaps he was normally known as James and he may well have used that name for the census and his "real" name George for "official" forms? Still doesn't help me to track him down with any certainty.

Perhaps that mystery 1881 census will help. I had a look at it last night, but now I'm even more confused, as none of the names and dates fit in with any that I have so far. However the names DO seem to be family names. My initial vague thought is that is LOOKS like Griffith siblings married Bird siblings - but it may just be a coincidence. More research required possibly tracing through the census?

Thanks for your interest anyhow,
regards,
Ruskie
