Liverpool Workhouse - Rowan
« on: Friday 26 January 07 11:22 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone help me with this, please?

I have a birth certificate for WILLIAM ROWAN, born 11th May 1882 in LIVERPOOL WORKHOUSE.  Mother Bridget, servant, Bolton, Lancs.  Father unknown.
Birth in the sub-district of Mount Pleasant.
Ref 8b 138

There's no mention of the father, as you can see.  Are there any other records I can use to find out who he is?  I've found her on the 1891 census with William, living as a boarder with another family.
I did read somewhere of Bastardy Bonds - anyone know what they are and where they are kept?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Beaumont, Traylor - Hereford
Cull, Davies  - South Wales.
Shevlin - Newcastle.

Genuki says this...which I did'nt know, so you learn something new every day

Trying to find details of bastardy cases after 1839 is difficult. Bastardy bonds and other parish bastardy documents ceased to be used after 1834 when the Poor Law Unions were created. From 1834 to 1839 the Workhouse administrators initiated bastardy proceedings through the Petty and Quarter Sessions Courts, and from 1839 all bastardy cases were heard at Petty Sessions, and initiated by the mother, who had to produce corroborative evidence to convict the putative father.

I found this - Liverpool Record Office holds records of the Liverpool Select Vestry (ref: 353 SEL). These include the records of the Liverpool Workhouse, Brownlow Hill, 1841-1928 (ref: 353 SEL/18-25). The workhouse was demolished in 1931 to make way for the Roman Catholic Cathedral

they may have something on Bridget even if it's only an entry in the Admissions Register

Good luck

Suey,
I suppose I would have to visit the Liverpool Record Office in person, would I?  Or would those records be online?  I'll look at that site you told me about and see what else I can find.

I could put in a request to see if anyone is visting the L,pool office.
Thanks,
Tony R

The marriage certificate should name her father and his occupation to start with.  Witness names can also be helpful.

Have you looked at the 1911 entry for the William Rowan in the WH?  He was not born in Liverpool

1881 also shows b Ireland
