The only Hussars i can find in the Egypt intervention in 1882 were the

19th Royal Hussars (Queen Alexandras Own)

Thats very interesting and seems to fit in although he married in 1887 and was back down the mines in 1891

Perfect timescale then Chris. He could well have been back by then.

Do we have a name for him? I wonder if anyone has the Egypt medal roll and could see if he is listed.
