Has anyone got a trade directory - Shiells
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 19:24 GMT (UK) »
Hiya, has anyone got a trade directory for East Lothian for the early 1800s. I am trying to trace info on one of my ancestors Peter Shiells who was an inn keeper. I have no idea where he was born, all I know is that he married Elizabeth Lemon in Haddington in 1795.

Bennett - Devonport
Catleugh & Shiells - East Lothian
Galvin, McLaren, Cullen & Dowling - Waterford, Ireland

Thomson - Leith & Muthill
Thorney, Hawkin, Lewis - Herefordshire

I do not have a directory, but in the 1841 census, SCT1841/684 there ia an Elizabeth Shiells aged 65 as a lodging house keeper at Tower Bank. That would make her dob around 1776, married at 19. I think Tower Bank is in Portobello, Edinburgh EH15 area. Hope this helps.

Ive seen the name Lemon before on my search of Shiells...

I also have a Peter Shields in mid Lothian B. around 1851....Not the same guy though...My side of the Shiells seems to be around the Lothian area from 1795-1913....Furthest I have been able to go is John Shiells b 1795 married Mary Nisbet 1822...His first son was Andrew b. 1825 so I doubt there is a connection......Right around Berwickshire/Lauder......

Good luck on your searching and Ill keep an eye out for your connections....I also enjoy connecting the other Shiells sides..
