Ahem...Yearly Revisions up to 1930s

Hi Irish Rootschatters,

Wondering if anyone could kindly answer my question (out of curiosity)...

I read on one of the Irish websites--forgot what its name. It stated that there are yearly revisions to Griffith's Valuations.

If that is true, is it feasible for one to go in the library to look up on the yearly revisions on it?

Yes there are and it is a wonderful resource but not explained much - basically the Griffiths evaluation was performed and you can see all the names there - well they kept books in some areas showing changes to the ownership and tenacy -in the books you can see the plot numbers of land and houses with names beside them [just like Griffiths]- names are scored out replaced with others in different coloured inks and a date by the side in the same colour of ink -  and you are right some go up to the 1930s.

The only place I know that holds these records is PRONI in Belfast - I don't think there is a copy anywhere else as I suspect they are not worth microfilming?  Maybe someone can tell me I'm wrong though.  Which area are you looking for?

Thank you for replying to my post. I am glad that my question has been answered.

The areas I am looking are: Budore and Knockcairn in Tullyrusk, Co Antrim.

Hopefully, there is some further information on these farms.

Hi FionaLorraine and other Rootschatters,

I need a BIG help with clarifying this "situation" with the Griffith's Valuations.

I got the information I was seeking after paid a small fortune today.

They said that there is no particular person in specific location when I knew he was in the 1861-62 as one Rootschatter so kindly gave me the link.

I would be EXTREMELY grateful to anyone who could pop in PRONI to check it out to see if the person was mistaken about this or not.

The process (Griffith's Valuations) began in 1848 in the far south of Ireland and finished in the North in 1864.

Ray Marshall for contributed a lot of information about the Valuations for Ireland to County Kerry, Ireland at http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlker/griffexp.html I think your query relates to The Cancelled Books which are available at both the archive at the Valuation Office, Irish Life Centre, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin and at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, 66 Balmoral Avenue, Belfast.

In Ireland, the Griffiths Valuation microfilm may be found in:
The National Library
The National Archives
The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland
The Genealogical Office

The first Valuations were taken in Dublin in 1848-51. This link show the Timeframe of the Valuations.

Volumes of the Valuation for their areas are also available in Libraries throughout Ireland.

The Valuation notebooks which continue from the printed version of Griffith's Valuation are at PRONI. They would not photocopy well, due to faded ink and subtle variations in coulours, and think they have not been microfilmed for the same reason.
If a property is listed in Griffith's it is generally possible, although not always easy, to follow it through each notebook up till 1930s.
