Sunbury, Mddlx, Wales family - Any pre1881
« on: Sunday 29 February 04 09:30 GMT (UK) »
Could somebody please look up information for:

Stephen Wales, born Margate (Flossgate), Kent
children: Henry, Walter, Hannah, Robert and Emily

Stephen was listed as a labourer and widow in 1881, living at Green Street in Sunbury

I would like to know who his wife was.

Thanks!

It keeps me off the streets ;)

Hi there treedigger+

The 1891 census on line produced the followeing:

RG12/ 550/ Folio 43/ Page 39 – Walton, Surrey

WALES Stephen, Head, Marr, 47, born Margate, Kent
Selina, Wife, Marr, 37, Sunbury, Kent
William R, Son, Unm, 15, Sunbury, Kent

Hope you can make some use of it

The 1871 on line has not as yet got around to transcribing Kent.

Hi Chris  :D

Thank you for the information.

I am a bit confused about Stephen Wales, as I have him listed as having married Hannah W(h)ales in june 1870, Thanet, Kent.
They had 5 children as far as I know, Henry George, Walter Stephen, Hannah Elizabeth, Robert William and Emily Esther (my great-grandmother).

Robert William was listed as being 5 years old in the 1881 census, so he would be 15 in the 1891 census.

The 1881 census also cites a William Robert Wales, 5 years old, as a visitor with George E. and Ann Roper in London. This William Robert Wales also is the son of a Stephen Wales.
I guess that is the Stephen and William R. Wales that you found. My guess is (as both Stephen's were born in Margate) that they are cousins, or otherwise related.

"My" Stephen Wales was listed as a widower in the 1881 census, and presumably died before 1901.

Thanks for the info and effort anyway, it might come in handy when trying to piece together the family.

Guess what   :o

The facts from the 1891 census were correct! Stephen Wales married again after Hannah Whales' death, to a woman named Selina Banbury in March 1882, Chertsey!

They had 5 children together, which might explain why Selina appears to be dead in 1901. Poor woman must have been worn out  >:(  Wonder if Stephen had any other hobbies   :-X

Anyway, not that important to my particular line of descent, but always nice to know the full Monty about one's family, i.e. my gr.gr.grandfather.

I also think I have found his parents, they probably are John Foster Wales and Mary Ann Appleton. The occupation of "brick layer" gave it away, both the Wales and Whales men were employed in that line of work.
I think there also might be a common ancestor for both families, as they keep giving their children similar names like Stephen, Hannah and Emily.

More needles in an ever growing hay stack, but fun to do, anyways   ;D
