Fanny Bradley nee Gainford
« on: Friday 02 February 07 15:24 GMT (UK) »
I have been researching my family history for a few years now, and I would love to sort out a family story about my great grandmother’s sister.

According to family lore she died in childbirth in the Klondike.

Her marriage certificate shows the following –
4th March 1899 at Christ Church Mayfair in the Parish of St George Hanover Sq. London
William Bradley, age 32, bachelor, Leut. R N R married
Fanny Gainford, age 29, spinster.

I have found William Bradley in the 1901 Census living as a boarder in Liverpool and shown as a widower. I have searched the GRO indexes in the UK, Consular records and Marine death records - no success.

I have no idea whether the Klondike story is true, or why a Leut. in the Royal Navy Reserve should be in the Klondike with his new wife.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Klondike née Clondike is a region of the Yukon Territory in northwest Canada, east of the Alaska border. It lies around the Klondike River, a small river that enters the Yukon River from the east at Dawson.

The Klondike is famed because of the Klondike Gold Rush, which started in 1897 and ended the following year. Gold has been mined continuously in that area except for a hiatus in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Fanny BRADLEY
Year of Record: 1883
Source: Passenger List: Port of Halifax
Comments: Arrived on the 'Peruvian'
Age: 27
Reference: National Archives of Canada: Microfilm Reel No. C-4512 page 5

Name is right but the year is off. So is the age.

I think any record of her death would be in Canada.

Thanks Susan

As you can tell, my North American geography is a bit shaky.  Canada next stop.

I have a copy of the family tree in my possession. I am Harry Gainford’s grandaughter.
I have tried to post a decent resolution image of this but this site only allows uploads of 500kb which is far too small.
Please drop me a line though and I can always email one by another means.
Emily Payne, born in Whitehaven.

Hi Emily

Thanks for getting in touch - it's always great to find someone else researching the same family. I am descended from Henry Gainford and Martha Guest through their son Joseph, his son Isaac and his daughter Hannah, my great grandmother.

I did eventually find some information about Fanny Bradley nee Gainford that confirms the story outlined above.
I had an email conversation with a very helpful lady from the Yukon Archives who found the following -

"In the reference material researched and compiled by Star and Ed Jones titled "Hillside Public Cemetery, Oct. 26, 1898-1984"  there is listed 'Bradley, Fanny, age 30 and Bradley (baby)' , with November 18, 1899 as their date of death. The Hillside Cemetery, also known in the past as Evergreen, was Dawson's second public cemetery.  The listing was compiled by the Joneses over many years and from many sources. Those graves that had readable markers are noted - neither of the Bradley graves did. I checked the St. Mary's Hospital death records for that date, and there was no entry. This is not unusual, since most women would have given birth at home. Neither are they listed in the mortuary records in our holdings. Unfortunately, the microfilmed newspapers we hold of this time period are too faded to read."

And also this, but doesn't know the source, possibly church records -

Bradley, Fannie
30 yrs.

Cumberland County, England
Protestant
1869
1899/11/18
[Cause of death] Natural
[Details] Childbirth

Widower, William Bradley

AFR #38; see Bradley (child)    "Funeral November 22, Rev. H.A. Naylor. Infant died same day."

Bradley
6 days
Male
Dawson City, Yukon, Canada
1899/11/12
1899/11/18

Hillside
Father, William Bradley

AFR #39; see Fannie Bradley   "Rev. H.A. Naylor. See Fannie Bradley. Mother died same day."

A sad story but not too unusual I guess

Hilary

You can post names of anyone known to be deceased or born over 100 years ago.  Some people are sensitive to having their information publicly available due to identity theft, etc., so this is the rule here to avoid upsetting them.

You're welcome to exchange e-mail addresses and further information by personal message.
