Bowern (Bowering) & Lambert
« on: Saturday 03 February 07 00:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks

In need of some help!!

I received a copy of the marriage cert for some ancestors and I can't find any census or BDM records to match up!!!

Richard Bowern (changed from or to Bowering) married Caroline Lambert 1875.

Richard was born in Jersey c1844 (1881 or 1891 census). In one census his wife was Caroline then Mary. I am assuming caroline died and he remarried.

Richard and Caroline had a few chn, one being Ellen, my grt grt grandmother.

Marriage cert info: Richard Bowern aged 31 and a Labourer, address Braddons Hill Torquay, his father was John Bowern, deceased, gardener. Caroline Lambert aged 26, no Occ, same address, her father: Barnet Lambert, deceased, labourer. (Unusual name but can't find a match!)

The marriage took place in the Register Office and was witnessed by Samuel Drew and William Coleman.

Don't really know where to go from here, any inspiration??

Look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks
Audrey

I'm struggling to find this family too!

What is the ref. for the 1881 census?  Sorry if I'm being thick, but I can't see them at all there...

In 1891, I see 2 separate families:

Richard and Mary BOWERING  (Richard b. Jersey c1840) - dau Ellen b. Torquay c1880.

Richard W and Caroline BOWERN  (Richard b. Kilburn c1850) - dau Ellen Louise b. Kilburn c1884.

I can see Richard and Caroline in 1901, with daughter Ellen still at home.

Rambler

Many thanks for your help. Here is what I know:

According to the cert Richard's father was called John, some time ago someone helped me find  the following which ties in I think:
John Bowern 40  St Lawrence  Labourer E (from England)
    Elizabeth 40       Y (from Jersey)
    Caroline 8 Y
    Henry 4  Y

I discounted all this info a while back because I had no way of knowing for sure it was Richards family.

Then later found:
Richard Bowring St Helier born 16th Feb 1842     bapt. 1st Mar 1842
    Father - John Bowring
    Mother - Elizabeth Porter.

1881 Cesus info:  RG11/1703; Folio 108; Page 19;
Richard 34, Caroline (23 -mistake should say 32), Ellen 16, Henry 14, Richard 7, Tormoham, Devon.

1891 Cesus info:  RG12/2168; Folio: 72; Page: 18;
Richard 50 , Mary 40, Henry 25, Richard 19, Alfred, 14, Ellen 11, Caroline 4.

Something doesn't match with the chns ages!! Will have to check that again.

According to the 1901 census I found Ellen 20 is with William living in Torquay, Devon.

Thanks again
Audrey

OK - found them.  (BOWEN this time!).  I think Ellen's age should possibly be 16 months, as she's listed last, and this would fit roughly with the 1891 census.

In 1881 (wife Caroline) and 1891 (wife Mary), Richard's occupation is cutler - does that match the occupation on Ellen's marriage cert?

I can see Richard W BOWERN married to Caroline/Carrie/Carolina 1881-1901, and his occupation is wood turner - b. Marylebone.

However, I can see no sign of Caroline pre-marriage.  I wonder if her mother remarried when C was young, and she's under her step-father's name?

It's all very vague, isn't it?  They don't even seem sure when and where they were born....  ???  ???

Thanks again Rambler.

You're right about the 16months for the age.

And you're also right about it being rather vague, it's driving me mad!! Its' as though they've just appeared then disappeared!!

I can't find trace of Caroline before her marriage in 1875. I thought she would easily be found on the 1871 cesus but not! I have no idea where to go now.

Many thanks for your help so far, good to know that it's not just me who can't find them.

I did find this birth which might be related:

Births Jun 1847

LAMBERT    Barn[i_]tt
Whitechapel 2 587

I wondered about this census entry for 1861:

Class: RG9; Piece: 3837; Folio: 26; Page: 6 - 51 Collingwood St, North Shields
Bernard Lambert - Boarder - 56 - London    (Could say Barnard - difficult to read.)
Eliza Lambert - Boarder - 41 - Sheffield
Bernard Lambert - Boarder - 16 - Sheffield
Caroline Lambert - Boarder - 9 - Sheffield
Anthony Lambert - Boarder - 2 - Sheffield
(Large boarding house.)

It's about the only possibility I can see, although it's not a 100% convincing match.   ???
