when i add one of my own l little smilies that i downloaded, Why do i have to rename it before i can use it on another post.

I think it is because you need a unique name to refer to any file used on rootschat.    The name of the file you have downloaded must have already existed on Rootschat (not surprising as someone else has probably downloaded it too) so you need to rename it.
