Cherrington of Shifnal 1851/1861 Census
« on: Sunday 21 November 04 23:37 GMT (UK) »
My relative George Cherrington was the  son of Richard Cherrington according to his marriage certificate.  He was born  c1835 and I can find a promising entry on the IGI for this name baptised at Tong which is near Shifnal.  I can  find no entry for him on the 1851 census for Shifnal but is there an entry for him  at Tong?  I have his marriage in 1874 and on the 1881 census but no other entries.
Can anyone help?

no sign of George but looking at the 1881 he might still be in the East Indies.

like you found George's baptisim 20-8-1837 Tong and there were 2 more children to Richard and Elizabeth
Richard 19-11-1827 Tong

I have found George on the 1881 census living in Bolton with his family and working as a Labourer in an Iron Foundry.  He must have returned to England in the late 1870s.  However  although his wife  (still described as married) and family  remain in Bolton, George  disappears. He is not with his family on either the 1891 census or 1901 census (for Bolton).Could he not  settle down after the army?  Did he return to Shifnal or did he go abroad again?

More questions than answers!!!

Thanks for your help.
