Well, let's say Quebec is DIFFERENT different, while Canada is merely different ;D Although there are those who might contend that Quebec is not part of Canada at all...

Perhaps the 1877 birth was from another marriage...  J.J.

Actually, I was wondering the same thing. There is a large gap between that child and the next. The really weird thing is how the children are listed in the 1901 census:

Lena          1884
Crayton     1887
Allister       1891
Frank         1877

Why list the first child last? It's almost like he's not part of the family.

Unless there were several children who did not survive, it's an odd birth pattern.

Several reasons for eldest child being listed last: 1) forgot and then put him in, 2)wasn't living at home and put him in when he arrived to stay (might not be a bad idea to search for him listed again on his own), 3) could be from previous marriage as suggested above, 4) was an adopted or fostered child or child of another relative.

China,

What was George Moore's occupation?

Did he have a middle name or initial?

I think it says "ferblantier"....tinman/tinsmith?...

Hi Josephine,

George was a tinsmith. In French, ferblantier. He had no middle name as far as I know.

Aghadowey (what does aghadowey mean anyway :D?), I just did a search for Frank on his own. There are only 5 Frank Moores in Quebec, only the one whose age is anywhere close to being right, and it's this guy.

Yep, that be them! I think "Esabella" would be Isabelle or Isabel. Allister's first daughter was named Isabel, and I think Lena's middle name may have been Isabel, both spelled the same way.

Think I found George and family in 1881! How many tinsmiths named George Moore could there be in Quebec?

Ste-Gabriel, Hochelaga, Quebec (all Methodist):
George Moore 38 N.B. (not N.S.) tinsmith (ethnic origin Irish)
wife Mary Moore 36 England (English)
William Henry Moore 16 England servant (English)
Annie Walker 14 N.B. (Irish)
George Thomas Moore 11 N.B. (Irish)
Mary Isabella 9 N.B. (Irish)
Eddy Vicar Moore 5 U.S.A. (Irish)
Frank Wesley Moore 3 Quebec (Irish)
Edward Harlon Moore 5/12 Quebec (Irish).

Frank Wesley Moore is the correct age for Frank Moore on 1901 census. It looks from the above that George married Mary (William Henry Moore is perhaps her son?) and had at least 6 children.
N.E. (Nova Scotia) in 1901 should probably be N.B. That would explain why you haven't found George in Nova Scotia.

New Brunswick has some great records on-line (births deaths, marriages, etc).

p.s. aghadowey means "field of duffy" and is the name of a parish in County Londonderry, (now Northern) Ireland.

Hi Duffy ;D

You know, I spent many brain cells, a few of which may never recover, trying to figure if those two families were the same. They are so similar, and the timing is right, and Frank's age is close. I even had a page where I combined the two to see if they fit together.

But ultimately, I decided they were different families because:

1. George's birth date is wrong. Not a huge deal, I admit.

2. George's ethnicity is wrong. In 1881 he's Irish, and in 1901 he's English. And there's a WORLD of difference between the two :D Same thing for Frank.

3. George's birthplace is wrong. I spent much time contemplating the difference, in a francophone enumerator's mind, between N.E. and N.B. When I was growing up, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were interchangeable. To an enumerator, I really couldn't say. The fact remains, though, that George's birthplace is wrong.

4. Frank's age is wrong. If he was born in 1877, and he was, he should have turned 3 in 1880. By 1881 he'd be 4.

5. The children of the 1881 family all have middle names recorded. The 1901 children may have middle names or not, but they were not given to the enumerator. A weak agrument, admittedly.

So, now you've got me going through it all again. And again, and again ;D

Cheers,
China
