1851 census Wiltshire
« on: Monday 22 November 04 11:55 GMT (UK) »
William Giddings married in Wootton Rivers on 29/03/1851 but does not appear with his new wife on the census.  On his marriage cert his is living in Cricklade St Sampson as a labourer.  Would really appreciate it if someone could confirm that he made it back there in time for the census and any further details available.  Not sure where he was born but his father's name is Charles and may be from Bishops Cannings but not confirmed.
Big thank you!!

teabag,

Is there any other information you can give us e.g. William's age on the marriage cert (if he was obliging enough to give it ::) ) and his wife's name. We could perhaps widen the search a bit in case they were staying with other relatives.

Regards

Angela

And most especially the origins of William Cannings,  a Baptist, born abt 1791 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire

Thanks for all your work so far.  In answer to your question Angela, on the marriage certificate he was of full age (really useful!).  He married Ann Berrett who lived in Wooton Rivers with her family both before and after the marriage.  We have traced her family back through a number of generations in Wootton Rivers and earlier in Wilcot.  The only reference we have to William is his marriage certificate and a birth certificate for his son Frank in Wootton Rivers in the June of the same year as the marriage.  He was dead by 1881 when Frank was living with his mother in London.
Appreciate your help with this elusive figure!

I think I've found the family in 1871, as you can see it seems William had died before that year:

Andrew L Ash 34  Chippenham, Wiltshire, England Sis Husband  Lambeth  London
Francis I Ash 3  Notting Hill, Middlesex, England Nephew  Lambeth  London
Sarah Ash 30  Wooton River, Wiltshire, England Sister  Lambeth  London
Ann Giddings 47  Wooton Rivers, Wiltshire, England Head  Lambeth  London
Frank Giddings 19  Wooton Rivers, Wiltshire, England Son  Lambeth  London
Frederick W Giddings 12  Brixton, Surrey, England Son  Lambeth  London

RG10/685 Folio 40 Page 28
Street address: 26, Sussex Road
Lambeth

These are all the William Giddings, that I can find, who died in Wiltshire between 1851 and 1871:

GIDDINGS, William 1852 June Bradford upon Avon Somerset Wiltshire 5a 90
Giddings, William 1854 December Pewsey Wiltshire 5a 103
Giddings, William 1855 December Pewsey Wiltshire 5a 109
Giddings, William 1855 March Devizes Wiltshire 5a 76
Giddings, William 1859 September Devizes Wiltshire 5a 51
Giddings, William 1863 March Dursley Gloucestershire Wiltshire 6a 166
Giddings, William 1869 March Hungerford Berkshire Hampshire Wiltshire 2c 181
Giddings, William 1870 September Devizes Wiltshire 5a 62
Giddings, William 1871 March Warminster Wiltshire 5a

Couple for Lambeth too, though this looks a bit like the same person recorded twice:

Giddings, William 1858 September Lambeth Greater London London Surrey 1d 267
Giddings, William 1858 September Lambeth Greater London London Surrey 1d 269

Any help?

Thank you for this ;D.  Really useful.  It narrows the search down for him considerably as we now know where he wasn't.  Frederick became a doctor and moved to Ireland so it all fits in place.  Assuming Fred is bio son then we have a 13 year period to find his death and then a possible birth date and place.

Many thanks.

My pleasure. Keep chipping away. I suppose Fred's birth certificate would tell you whether William was a) still living then and b) give you an address close to the time of the 1861 census which someone in the London forum could probably search for you.

GIDDINGS Frank Son 9 b Woolton Rivers Wiltshire

Hi Kris

finally catching up with all these bits.  WE found his death when Fred was about 3months  old.  Still haven't found him in 1851 or 41.  So still don't know where he came from!
Will keep chipping away.
