HI

Sorry but this is not an easy task.   ???

Do you have a fathers name of the child you wish to search for?

And can you confirm the exact name of the child?

Willing to help if you can be a bit more accurate with your info.    ;)

Hello again Wendy,
Sorry, no other info.  Re those pass. lists referred to in my PM to you, this family found on the PROV (Public Records Office of Victoria)

1907 Vessel "Geelong" Port (B), British, arriving Oct 1907.

Mr and Mrs Hartley, children Miss CN, age 13, Miss DM age 17 and Miss JE age 16. (she's listed as Miss EJ on other lists)

NOTE: Just found out "ancestorsabroad" dates are now up to 1909. Had a look and found same listing but girls ages were hugely different. Depending which one is right, could make huge difference to search.

If ages on PROV are correct, then two of three girls born before marriage of 6th July 1893. Who were they??? Nieces of George?? Have all info on his siblings and their family. No matching initials. Hence looking for parents. Got other info of Free BDM.

Believe this (1907 trip) to be my Hartley family because Clara's father dying as result of surgery earlier in the year. She was the only daughter. Cannot believe she would not have come home under circumstances. Only listing for Hartley's arriving in OZ at this time.

One other listing for same family Vessel "Scharnhorst" dep Hamburg 1914, arr Oz in the May. Escaping war??

DaP found vessel for me and provided German links, but no useful info available.

One listing 1920 for two of the three girls arr in Oz from British port and one listing 1911 for a Clara and Martha Hartley, also dep from British port.

George had sister Martha, but ages are wrong to be her.  Could be transcription error. Can't get in to PROV to check. Will ask one of the locals to investigate next trip.

Sorry Wendy, i'm not sure if you can work with that, but it's all I have at the moment.

Many thanks

Sadieh

HI Helen

Well they're definately not visible under my usual searches on the census.

I noticed his Brother Edward R Hartley was a butcher in the 1891 census but yet his wife is visible in the 1901 census stating married so where is her Hubby.  So if George and Clara went earlier as your thinking then maybe Edward went with them - you know to help set them up travelling and such?

Do you know when Clara came in to the UK prior to marrying George?

Hi Wendy
Edward used to travel up and down the country and counties politicking. There was an expression for that which I read about in his bio. That's probably why he wasn't on the 1901 census. Hang on, he's got to be on there even if he was away from home...yes??

He went to NZ in 1911, wife too, for a year to lecture. Invite from the NZ Socialist Party, from there to Victoria (here) for six months.

Because our passenger records for other states are very limited, andon fiche, not online,  I haven't been able to establish if George and Clara came out here to Sydney or another city at another time.

The only pass. lists I could find for any Hartley's were the ones on PROV, and thats for Victorian arrivals. Unless I can get someone with full access to ancestorsabroad to check the image and get ALL the family details off that listing for the "Geelong" I can't even confirm it's my family. Believe they are for reasons I mentioned earlier. I know the ship stopped off at Sydney, where her father was by this time. He closed the Melbourne store in 1894 and relocated his headquarters to Sydney. There were also stores in Perth and Brisbane.

I just need one bit of info from somewhere that will tell me where in the UK they lived. It had to be in the Bradford area, cause that's where all the family were, hers and his. I know her grandmother (James' mom) was living with her Aunt Emily Lucas nee Nicholson and her brood c:1861.

Just got another email re Edward. Is that you?? This computer can't do two things at once. Crashes all over the place.

Will go and check.

Forgot something.

I have no idea when Clara left here for the UK to marry. I believe she worked closely with her father in the ealier years, and I'm sure they travelled to and fro to the UK for family visits and on business, but as to when she went back permanently to marry, sorry, no clue.
