The procedure in both Scotland and England is very similar - in some instances only the terminology is different.

Deed Polls are an instrument of English law and are not applicable in Scotland

Yes, a Deed of Change of Name (deed poll) is an English legal document but it is recognised by all UK government departments and organisations including those in Scotland.  Many hundreds of Deed Polls  are issued to Scottish residents each year without any problems.

Thanks for your prompt response about the Citizens Advice Bureaux website. I may take a quick look see.

At this time I am only concerned with an England name change. The Scottish relatives probably changed names too but that research can wait.
