Heraldry challenge
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 08:58 GMT (UK) »
I have a description of the arms of Sir Richard de Whatton but can't find a picture of them.  Could someone attempt a picture?  The description is "Argent, on a bend sable, between six cross crosslets gules, three bezants".  I know what the words mean and can sort of visualise it, but would love someone to draw it.

Can you check the wording and the commas please.  As it is currently written there appears to be a colour missing and an extra comma inserted.

If I have read your description correctly it should be like this.

Sorry some how I couldn't count to six. ;)
Cheers

Guy, thanks.  I've found sufficient drawing software to get the basic shape, the bend and the bezants.  I'm having trouble with the cross crosslets.  Shouldn't there be 3 either side of the bend?  And shouldn't they be red?  David, I copied the description exactly from a piece online.

I agree with you Suttontrust but I don't see why the besants should be any particular colour and why there is a comma between "sable" and "between".  As written I try to put the six cross crosslets on the bend and then don't know what to do with the besants.  Should I put them between the crosses on the bend?

A roundle (a generic name for a plain circular figure of colour or metal) when gold is termed a bezant.

The description is not clear as it could mean the three bezants were between six crosses on the bend.
That would however give a cluttered look and so I don't think that was the intended meaning

Grammatically, chaps, I think the comma is in the right place.  Substitute parentheses: Argent, on a bend sable (between six cross crosslets gules) three bezants - the bend is between the crosses and has three bezants on it.
Now to look for red cross crosslets!  ;D
And cheers, Guy, that's brilliant.
