Hi Carol/Monica,

What did you make of this Chudesley name: -

Janet Bruce 55, Proprietor Of Houses, b. Haddington, Haddingtonsh
Isabella Chudesley 25, niece, b. Brechin, Forfarshire
Isabella Leslie 50, sister, Proprietor Of Houses, b. Panbride, Forfarshire

Could this be the daughter os sister isabella but the Leslie name has been mistranscribed, I have searched for chudeslys on SP and came up blank.

Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Tom

SP have her down as CLOUDESLEY on the index. Her submitted IGI entry:

Isabella Cloudsley  Birth: 03 APR 1835  Relief Session, Brechin, Angus, Scotland
Parents: Father: James Cloudsley    Mother: unknown unknown

Maybe things would be clearer from the earlier censuses, I'll have a try later.

Regards.

Hello everyone,
Wow you have all been working hard on this I really appreciate it all, I am just about to start working on all the info you gave me,  I wondered where the Bruce part came from, Jane and John named their youngets daughter Janet Bruce Soutar, and I once found a census for Jane and Janet Bruce was a servant on the same page, wondered about the link. Can I ask are you part of my branch of Leslies? regards Carol

Hi Carol

The only reference I have seen so far to the name Bruce on Jane's side is that her sister Janet married James Bruce.

My husband's Leslie side were originally from Aberdeen (not uncommon as you have seen!). A family member on his side has done all the family history. Wouldn't know if there was a connection, still waiting for the info  ::)

Regards.

Hi Monica,
Just pulled up Isabella Leslie's death cert.... lists parents as David Leslie and Agnes Houston, so now wondering if Janes death cert was mis written, or could be David John Leslie, or John David Leslie!  wondered if you had seen anything else with David on... I'm going to look down that root now!
Carol

I saw the David and wondered whether this was an informant's error by brother in law (not uncommon but always a pain when this happens as you are looking to verify every detail). Everything else fitted for father, occupation, place names and wife/mother's name Agnes Houston. It could also be that he was David John or other way round. We only have Jane and Mary's children's names to go by at this stage given that Isabella remained single.

Regards.

Well that was a quick find  :) Re Isabella, I think this is her christening entry, an actual extract:

ISABEL LESSLY  Christening:  26 JUN 1810  Panbride, Angus, Scotland
Parents: Father: JOHN LESSLY    Mother: ANN

Ann (and Nancy) is a common variant for Agnes, see www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=agnes
