Michelle,
Did you manage to have another look at those medals?
If you need help ID'ing any medals, let us know.

Or perhaps we can find more info for you given the details on the medals.

HI Neil,

No, I've not seen my dad this week and he has the medals.

School's closed for half term so I have two small boys bouncing around (whoopee).

I've been looking at the few army photos I've got, they're of the same group (more or less) in each pic. I wish they were in colour. Maybe you know what colour the uniforms would be. I can guess that one pic would be khaki, looks like WW1 khaki uniform.
I've attached some of them below. I'd love to hear any comments

Will post news of the medals as soon as I see the medals again.

Hi  ;D

Here's the medals, Dad's just brought them round so I've scanned them in - (its not the best pic, but its all I've got) I'll be grateful for any information on them.

Do you know what colour the uniforms would've been on the attachment before this one?

I've tried to put the scan on but it wont work. There already on this link. I put them on the wrong one earlier

Thanks

Michelle,
Top right with the 5 clasps is his Queens South Africa medal for the Boer War. If you look at the naming around the rim, it'll tell you his rank at the time.

Next to this is the miniature version of the same medal, as worn on certain occasions.

Top left is the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, which must date from 1908-10 (Edward VII on the obverse, and the medal wasn't instituted till 1908). Again, check the naming around the rim for his rank & unit at the time.

Below you have WW1 medals. The 1914-15 Star (on the right), British War Medals (bottom) and Victory Medal (centre with rainbow ribbon) is the standard WW1 trio.
The second star on the left therefore must belong to another man. I can't read the naming in the photo, but is seems to be to a Private? What is the name on this one?

Which one is your man in the photos?

Thanks Neil

Thats really interesting. My g-grandad on the top photo is the man with the big moustache (seated left). In the middle photo he's standing on the furthest left.

Would those uniforms in the bottom 2 pics have been scarlet on top? On the back of the middle pic it says "Sergt F Bini 1/4 F & L Regt - wounded in France"

I cannot find a record of his (or his fathers ) death. I know Fred was still alive in 1927 because my great uncle told me that was the first time he met him (when courting my g-aunt).

My dad thinks he died of pernicious anaemia. I'm pretty sure my grandma never met him and she married Fred's son (my grandad) in 1936.

BTW one of the Stars belonged to Richard Gledhill I post his memorial leaflet under "locomen" he was a private when he was killed aged 36  "14724  PTE R. GLEDHILL  L.N.LAN:R" is on the back. What does the L.N.LAN:R mean?

It seems that on the S/A medal Fred was a Corporal. On the Efficiency Medal onwards he was SJT (Sergeant).

Was the Eff. Medal awarded for a particular conflict? If so which one?

Thanks for your interest.

Yep, tunics in the bottom two photos are scarlet with white facings (collars, cuffs).
 :)

Richard Gledhill was Loyal North Lancashire Regt.
here's his CWGC entry:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=81362

The Efficiency medal isn't a campaign medal for a particular conflict. Rather it was granted for a minimum of 12 years service in the Territorial Force.

Richard was my Gran's uncle. Have you seen the memorial leaflet? It says something about Locoman. I'd never heard of the Loyal North Lancs Regt.

Coincidentally I'm reading a novel at the moment and it surrounds the Y & L's in S/A . The main character who's worked his way up through the ranks to Sergt refers to his Regt as the "Young and Lovelies". Have you heard of this terminology before?

Excuse my ignorance Michelle, but what exactly is Locoman?  ???

As for the "Young and Lovelies", I have heard that nickname before. Pretty much every regiment in the army had its own nickname, here are just a few

As far as I'm aware the Locomen worked on the railways. We found this pamphlet about the opening of a memorial to the men from the loco works among my grandma's belongings. Richard Gledhill was her uncle.
