Today I received the birth certificate for my Great Grandfather.
He was born on 17 July 1880 in Coldharbour, Capel, Surrey and was
registered as "Mathew Goby". His father is named as Henry Goby
(occupation Sweep), and his mother as Caroline Goby (FORMERLY
FOREMAN).
This is where I am confused. I have Henry Goby and Caroline on the
1861 census as living with her parents as vitiors. Caroline is listed
as daughter and Henry as Son-in-Law. Her Parents are John (abt 1811 Surrey) and Martha (Abt 1816, Norwood, Surrey) BEASLEY living in Rusper, Sussex/Surrey, and they have 3 other children listed as Emma (abt 1846, Horley), John (abt 1852 Sussex), and Martha Beasley (abt 1856 Capel, Surrey). John snr is listed
as a Hawker.
I have not been able to trace the family before 1861.
I have found via the BMD, a Caroline Beasley and Caroline Foreman
registered on the same page in the Reigate region in Oct/Dec 1844.
What was going on?
? Were they Beasley or Foreman. Why change the
names like that? Did they register Caroline twice, as Beasley and
Foreman?
Does anyone have any ideas?
