Henry Bright - Mayor of Doncaster circa 1867?
« on: Monday 26 February 07 14:09 GMT (UK) »
I found a reference to Henry Bright, son of Philip Bright of Doncaster. Apparently, Henry had been mayor of Doncaster and died in 1867 from falling down the stairs in Mansion House.

Does anyone have access to any old Doncaster papers that can confirm this?

Also, I can't find him in the 1861 census. He had a son, Alfred and I would expect him to have been listed as a watchmaker or jeweller or something of that ilk. I got excited finding someone in St. Pancras. He was listed as chemist though with jeweller crossed out. However, I found that Henry in 1871 listed as a teacher of languages.

Thanks
Isobel

Hi Isobel,

Have you thought about contacting Doncaster Council?  I'm sure they would have details about their mayors in the archives.

www.doncaster.gov.uk   is their website.

Thanks for the suggestion Nanny Jan. I will do just that.

Wendy - no I don't have a date of birth for Alfred. I believe that he was just a child when his father died. Certainly, as of 1851, Henry wasn't married. Alfred, according to the snippet that I had, went on to also be a watchmaker and I think went into partnership with the Woodmansee family, who his father had been in partnership with.

I believe that Henry was born around 1817 in Doncaster - the son of Philip Bright. I have him in the 1851 census in Doncaster with Henry Woodmansey who was his partner in Bright and Woodmansey, Jewellers. At the time, Henry was listed as aged 34 and unmarried.

The snippet that I found said that he died in 1867 and his son Alfred took control of the business, though he was very young.

HI

Strange that you have seen a snippet of info that says that Henry Bright died in the year 1867 because guess who else is shown as passing away the same year

Henry Woodmansey

and Henry Woodmansey also had a son called Alfred.

HI

I think somewhere along your lines of enquiry you have got mixed up with the identies of the two men Henry Bright and Henry Woodmansey

It was Henry Woodmansey who was the Mayor of Doncaster and it was he who had the accident at mansion House after the Bazaar that had been held the very same afternoon.

And as said earlier it was he who had a son called Alfred.
