enemy aliens?
« on: Wednesday 24 November 04 16:07 GMT (UK) »
i would like to know whether there is a list anywhere of people sent from the UK to the isle of man at the beginning of WW2 because of their german or austrian origins.  it is possible my father may have been one of these people, he used to mention being on the iom at beginning of WW2 but was always careful never to give too much info away.  i would be very grateful for any info on this matter.

Hi wondering,

welcome to rootschat.

this is something I must get round to aswell, one day.

My guess is, that any records of internment would be kept at the National Archives at Kew.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

I entered "internment of aliens" in the search box and got 57 matches, but haven't got as far as going through them all.  :(

One day ....   ???

In the meantime, have a go, and let us know if you find any useful info  :)

p.s.
do you know if he was naturalised ? If so, it might be worth trying Kew for naturalisation records, for more info. : http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/naturalisation/default.htm

p.p.s.
keep an eye on this topic aswell, maybe someone will put some useful info. here for us:

I am also looking to find out about my Italian great grandad who was interned after working in England from before the war. If I find anything useful I'll let you know.

I contacted the museum at the above link and they were able to get back to me with the date and place of my g grandad's internment and his address previous. His release date was unknown.
I was then advised that if I needed more info my best bet would be to contact a researcher at the National Archives as it would be difficult to search for.
Hope this helps

Have you heard that a reenactment of the first internees (women) will take place on Aug 6/7 05 in Port Erin IOM.  There may be many visitors who have stories to swop and perhaps they may have photographs.  My wife and I will be there and intend to take some photographs of people that we do not know in the hope that we can find people who knew my father and mother.  Both were interned for the duration of the war and my brother was born there.
