Wendy, its a long story!!
I sent for Charles Poole's death cert as he was 'supposedly' married to my great grandmother Ann Wright c 1863 in Sheffield. Can't find a marriage record for that. He was a soldier in 8th Kings Regt then. They had a son William Wright Poole born 1864 and then my grandmother Alice born 1869, both born Sheffield. In 1871 Ann Wright/Poole was living with her parents George and Ann in Pitsmoor saying she is married but no sign of Charles.
Charles had died when my grandmother married in 1889 which led me to find his death.
I found him in 1886, death in 11 Sheaf Bank Heeley, and at the same time found a death in 1885 and then her birth 10 months earlier of a daughter Emily. The child was born at 11 Sheaf Bank Heeley too and gave her mother as Annie Poole nee Prince.
I started to look for that marriage and found one for Annie and Charles in Liverpool in 1873 which was about the time my great grandmother had gone to live with Walter Rodgers and taken children with her. Can't find a marriage for them either!!
I can only assume that he didn't marry the first wife or the 2nd one was bigamous.
I have found a Charles Poole in Salford Barracks in 1881 but when my grandmother was born he was a Brass Castor. He may have come out of the army at that time and may be gone back again by 1881. I believe that the 8th Kings is a Liverpool Regiment, perhaps he had gone back there from Salford.
A long and tortuous search for his details, perhaps I will never know the answer.
