1891 Census Look-Up Please in Sheffield
« on: Saturday 03 March 07 14:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find Annie Poole who was widowed in 1886 whilst living in Sheaf Bank Heeley Sheffield. She was born c 1846 (a guess) and married in Liverpool 1873 to charles Poole.

I am afraid I do not know any more about her, except that she had a baby Emily who died in 1885 at the above address.

Any help would be appreciated.

Margaret

HI margaret

Have you found her in the 1881 census?    Do you know her maiden name then if you know when she married Charles Poole?

Hi,

Her maiden name was Annie Prince on Emily's birth certificate.

I can't see her as a Poole on 1881.

They married in 1873 in Liverpool.

Regards,

Margaret

Margaret

do you have anything on Charles Poole?

If charles  died for Annie to be a Widow in 1886 then what info do you have to show that it was him?

Have you obtained their marriage cert?

If not and you are sure that they married each other then maybe obtaining the cert would def give more info, like her dads name.

Wendy, its a long story!!

I sent for Charles Poole's death cert as he was 'supposedly' married to my great grandmother Ann Wright c 1863 in Sheffield. Can't find a marriage record for that. He was a soldier in 8th Kings Regt then. They  had a son William Wright Poole born 1864 and then my grandmother Alice born 1869, both born Sheffield. In 1871 Ann Wright/Poole was living with her parents George and Ann in Pitsmoor saying she is married but no sign of Charles.

Charles had died when my grandmother married in 1889 which led me to find his death.

I found him in 1886, death in 11 Sheaf Bank Heeley, and at the same time found a death in 1885 and then her birth 10 months earlier of a daughter Emily. The child was born at 11 Sheaf Bank Heeley too and gave her mother as Annie Poole nee Prince.

I started to look for that marriage and found one for Annie and Charles in Liverpool in 1873 which was about the time my great grandmother had gone to live with Walter Rodgers and taken children with her. Can't find a marriage for them either!!

I can only assume that he didn't marry the  first wife or the 2nd one was bigamous.

I have found a Charles Poole in Salford Barracks in 1881 but when my grandmother was born he was a Brass Castor. He may have come out of the army at that time and may be gone back again by 1881. I believe that the 8th Kings is a Liverpool Regiment, perhaps he had gone back there from Salford.

A long and tortuous search for his details, perhaps I will never know the answer.

HI Margaret

Just thought I'd post my latest finding for you

1891 in Amwell, Clerkenwell Middlesex is this family

Walter Rogers bn circa 1842 Sheffield Occ Metal Polisher

Ann Rogers bn circa 1846

Herbert Rogers bn circa 1876 Occ Metal Polisher

Percy Rogers bn circa 1879

George Rogers bn circa 1883

Elizabeth Rogers bn circa 1885

Emily Rogers bn circa 1886

This family bears an uncanny resemblance to Anne Rogers who was with Walter and her Wright chidren in the 1881 census.

Is it your Annie?  Alices' mum

Hi Wendy,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes that is Ann Wright Alice's mother. I managed to track her down to her death also Walter's death. They both died in Woolwich.

It is the infamous Charles Poole that is causing me a headache plus his other wife!! I think there must be other children to this marriage but don't know where to start. I think the family were better off without him but I would like to see closure on this other family, if possible,

Regards,

Margaret

Ok.

So would you be willing to splash out a little money?

Would you obtain the marriage cert of this Charles Poole and Ann* Prince just to see how old each of them were to tally with your thoughts and feeling on this man?

It may be your only way of knowing if the Charles Poole was the same man or not.

Wendy,

I think that has to be the answer in the beginning, find marriage details, and then I could work back for Annie Prince's whereabouts on earlier census. Charles's dob seems moveable according to his army service.

Thanks for help me.

Margaret
