Hi Susan

If I'm not too late:  bap 16.2.1837 Sarah Varney at the Wesleyan, Eaton Bray
IGI says parents John Varney and Mary 'Pickers'. could you confirm that the records actually says Vickers.
Also Sarah Varney married Joseph Humbles, 1862 Dec reg Leighton Buzzard district. any chance of a look-up please, with names of fathers etc.
Thank you
Carol

No good news I'm sorry to say.

Did not find the bap for Sarah in the extracted entries.

No marriage for Sarah to Joseph Humbles in L/Buzzard, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Eaton Bray and Billington.

A Joseph Humbles buried in All Saints, L/Buzzard 12/6/1866 aged 49 years.

Am I right in thinking that Sarah (nee Turner) first wife of Joseph Varney married at Mentmore in 1852, he died in 1857 and the Sarah went on to marry Joseph Humbles?
If so then I would suspect either a register office wedding or a parish in Bucks such as Linslade, Mentmore. Might be worth a try on the Bucks board. I do get to Bucks CRO occasionally but no idea when my next visit will be. But will try and remember and ask if you have made any headway.

Susan

Thanks for your reply.  Joseph Humbles died 1866, Sarah Turner married Joseph Varney at Mentmore 1852, Joseph died 1857- all correct. Sarah Varney who married Joseph Humbles would have been Joseph Varneys sister. I have only managed to find Sarah Humbles in the 1881 census visiting Joseph Varneys son in London. Gets a bit confusing all these Sarahs and Josephs. I have from the IGI Sarah Varney born 5.9.1836, bap 16.2.1837 Wesleyan Eaton Bray, and a marriage of Sarah V and Joseph Humbles Dec Reg 1862 Leighton Buzzard district from free BMD.
I really do appreciate all your help.  Susan, when did register office marriages start, any idea?

Thansk again

Carol

Carol I'm a bit puzzled so bear with me. Can you tell me who you are back tracking from as it doesn't add up to me. I do not think Sarah Humbles( nee Turner) is sister to Joseph Varney. I do think she was  the wife of Joseph and then wife of Joseph Humbles. As you say in 1881 she is with son James in London.......in 1861 is a widow in L/Buzzard with sons James and Joseph Varney and 1871 again a widow in L/Buzzard W/hse. But this Sarah was born Stoke Hammond, Bucks.........not Eaton Bray.
Am uncertain as to whether you need the Varney's of Mentmore or Eaton Bray.

Civil marriages began in Sept 1837 when the GRO index
started.

Am happy to be a sounding board and help out if I can.
