Appleby gaol
« on: Thursday 08 March 07 11:37 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me how I go about finding the records of 1841 inmates of Appleby gaol? I have tried a couple of 'channels' via Kendal, but alas they don't either reply or they just give general info about Kendal....neither very helpful in my search unless I want to know all about yellow lines at the sides of roads!!!!  :-\  I would like to know the reason for Ellen Bingham's imprisonment....

Try the A2A site (Access to Archives) - see if the prison is mentioned specifically, or try the tack of searching thru Assizes and Quarter sessions for the area to see if the name crops up ...

http://www.a2a.org.uk/

I've also found this Nat Archives quick search useful ...

PS. Was she in prison for the 1841 census date ?

Time Team did a dig there a couple of years ago as most of it is now the police station carpark.  There is a Time Team website but I don't know if they have old digs there.  They seemed to have had a lot of information about inmates including one who escaped.

Did your "channels" in Kendal include the Record Office?   They should know who holds the records.

We now think that although Ellen Bingham is on the prison census, she was not so much an inmate as a live in worker/char lady....

I have had a couple of previous occasions to contact Kendal for various reasons, but sadly I must have either hit upon the odd 'grumpy' or that it is a general policy that they are disinterested in FH and don't think kindly to researchers.... I found that the most helpful place to have dealings with was Norwich..... but perhaps I have just been unlucky with Kendal.  :'(

Thank you to everyone for the help....
