POLAND - Iendrzejowski
« on: Tuesday 13 March 07 20:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
This is an entirely new area of research for me, so excuse me if any of my questions are obvious/old news.

I have a Stanislas Iendrzejowski (or Jendrzejowski) in the 1851, 1861 & 1871 census in London. Described as an engineer, born in Poland (no more) and born c.1805 (the ages given don't tally exactly)

I also have a marriage in 1842 in Westminster to Stanislas Jedizejoroski which I think could be him. It's one of those surnames that seems to have at least a dozen variant spellings in the records!

So my questions:
- He must have arrived in GB sometime between 1805 and 1842. Is there any way I can narrow this down at all?
- Where in Poland was the family from? Can anyone suggest anywhere to look that may tell me?

Thanks in advance,
Neil

There might be something on him at Kew, there were some alien registration records kept in the early to mid 1800s.

Many thanks for that.
I suspected a visit to Kew was on the cards!

The true spelling is more likely to be:  Jendrzejowski.

Be careful. The spelling for a female in the family would end in 'a'.

Thanks for that Kaja, I did wonder which of the dozen spellings I've seen in the British records would be the right one.

Is there any possibility of following the trail in Poland I wonder? Baptism records perhaps?

It did occur to me as well that Poland of the early 19th century was possibly a very different geographical entity to the Poland of today.
Much check some old maps  :) :)

Neil 1821,

Church records are the best way to go. But you have to trust to luck when you write for such records in Poland. Many letters seem to go unanswered.

When researching Poland it is always a good idea to consult maps and a history book. You will have problems with place names and you might find people belonging to more than one country. All because of Polish partition.

The name Jendrzejowska exists here in Wroclaw [Breslau]. It's my daughter's teacher's name.

If you need an English / Polish translation just send me a PM.
