Matthew,

I had a look on Ancestry at the 1871 census and came up with one possibility. Alexa's birthplace is listed as Lochbroom, and their address for the census is Ballacharn House, Edderton, Ross and Cromarty. William is listed as a farmer. The family members are as follows:

William Ross 47
Alexa Ross 24
Andrew Ross 7
Ann Ross 3
Donald Ross 6 Mo
John Ross 5

Kathy

Fraser, Mackenzie, McLean, Macrae and others of Shieldaig and Moray

Hello Matthew

This is the marriage of William and Alexa:

26th May 1863, Edderton Free Church

William Ross, 36, crofter, bachelor

Parents - Andrew Ross, crofter (dec) and Anne m.s. Polson

and

Alexandrina Macleod, 24, domestic servant, spinster

Parents - John Macleod, farmer (dec) and Bell m.s. Maclean

I assume Bell is short for Isobel/Isabella

Witnesses - Donald Ross and John McKay

Hi Matthew

This looks like the family in 1891. William may have died by this point (or simply be away from the home!). All the children showing as born in Edderton, Ross Shire:

Alexanderina Ross 49, crofter, b. Lochbroom
Andrew Ross    27
Donald Ross    20
James Ross    17
William Ross    13

Address: Balcharn, Edderton, R & C

Regards.

There are two possibilities for Alexandrina in the 1851 census, both would fit for different reasons:

Murdoch McLeod    70, head miller farmer, b. Augal, Sutherland
Janet McKenzie    60, daughter, b. Resolis, Ross-Shire
Barbara McKenzie 40, servant, b. Edderton, Ross
Alexandrine McLeod 16, servant, b. Lochbroom
Hennett McLeod    15, , farm servant, b. Assynt, Sutherland
Walter Ross 40, servant, b. Sarbet Easter, Ross

Address: Miltown, Ederton

The other census entry possibility, would fit for parents' names and Alexa's age but not for birth place or father's occupation. All the children showing as born in Kilmuir:

John McLeod    38, shoemaker, b. Logie
Bel McLeod    36, England
Ann McLeod    15
Alexandrina McLeod    9
Helen McLeod    7
Robert McLeod    4
Jemmenia McLeod    1

Address: Miltown, Kilmuir Easter, R & C

And then again, there is John McLeod, the fidler in Lochbroom and his wife Anabel.....

I think probably, the first entry is more likely, given her marriage in Ederton.

Regards.

Monica

From IGI, this looks like William Ross's birth details together with some siblings:

1. ANN ROSS   Birth: 11 NOV 1814/ Christening: 18 NOV 1814 Edderton, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
2. DONALD ROSS OR CHRISTOP Birth: 10 APR 1817/ Christening: 10 APR 1817 Edderton, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
3. JOHN ROSS OR CHRISTOPHER Birth: 27 AUG 1819/ Christening: 02 SEP 1819 Edderton, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
4. WILLIAM ROSS Birth: 12 MAY 1822/ Christening: 23 MAY 1822 Edderton, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

They are a mixture of submitted and actual extracts from the OPRs (William's is an actual extract). Father Andrew shows with both names 'Ross or Christop(e)' with the following submitted details on IGI:

Andrew Ross or Christopher  Birth:  1789  Little Dallas, Edderton, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland. Marriages: Spouse: Ann Polson Marriage:  04 FEB 1814

I haven't checked to see whether there are corresponding entries on SP from the OPRs.

The family in 1841, with all the usual rounding down in age to the nearest 5 yrs. They look to have been farming at Beulacharn for some time:

Andrew Ross, 65, farmer
Ann, 50
William, 15
Alex Beaton, 13

Address: Becil-charn, Edderton

1861:

William Ross, 33, Crofter Of 5 Acres,  b. Edderton
Ann, mother, 72, b. Tain
Flora Munro, 27, servant, b. Tain

Address: Balacharn, Edderton

Regards.

Monica, you are a love  :)

Matthew asked me yesterday on another thread to find the marriage of William and Alexa for him, so I put it here rather than on the Lanarkshire thread.

You now have given him all their census info as well - Matthew will be dead chuffed!

I think the first Alexa that you found in the 1851 is the most likely, as she seems definite about Lochbroom being her birthplace and the age fits. Is there anything on the 1841?  I remember having a quick look a while ago in my 'local resources' but could not find a definite.

Gadget, couldn't find any relevant entry for Alexa at all in 1841. Even looked at male entries (Alexr. etc) in her age group to see whether the household made sense or connected to parents John & Bell variants ...and nothing sadly.
