Williamson Gatehouse Stoneykirk?

Would someone kindly be able to look up the 1861 Scotland Census for John Williamson, Jane Williamson, John Williamson (child) and Jane Williamson (child). They may by now be living in Stoneykirk or may still be in Creetown.

Cannot see the family at all in 1861, either in the trascripted index or on SP 
I can see them in 1871 in Leswalt with their growing family, have you got this info?

Thanks, Monica, for your kind reply. Yes, actually Gadget found the family for me on the 1871 census in Stranraer. I have just come in from the local library and I too have had no success finding Jane and John Williamson  on the 1861 in either Stoneykirk, Stranraer or Creetown, where she lived before marriage in 1855. She was previously Jane Marshall and married John Williamson in Anwoth (Gatehouse of Fleet). I have a copy of the certificate for that event.
The Marshalls were a family of tinkers/tinsmiths and had a lot of connections with Kilmaurs, Ayrshire. Maybe they went somewhere else at the time of the census. It's a mystery which remains to be solved.

I did search through the index for any possibilities anywhere in Scotland and nothing unfortunately. Maybe England or a trip over to Ireland  ?? You have a 3yr gap between Jane's birth in 1860 and then Alexander's in 1863 in Stonekirk.

I had not thought of a trip but I had noticed that Jane (my gt. grandmother) was born 18 March 1860 (according to LDS). John Williamson came from NORTHERN Ireland but I don't know where from. In those days what exactly was Northern Ireland? On his marriage certificate (1855) he was down as a widower with 2 living children. I don't know where the children went to after his 2nd marriage. Were all the Irish records destroyed in a fire in Dublin? Do you know anything about that?

I'm not 100% certain on the Irish side. It's a big pity though that the 1855 marriage cert. didn't show where exactly John was from in Ireland (very often, if you are lucky to find an 1855 event,  this will be the only opportunity to find out ).

From what you said about him showing as a widower with two (living) children together with his marriage to Jane Marshall being in Kircudbright, I have found this 1851 census entry which looks interesting:


John Williamson    30, vagrant agr. lab., b. Ireland
Margaret Williamson    33, b. Ireland
David Williamson    8, b. Penham, Dumfries
John Williamson    4, b. Girvan, Ayr

Address: Kempleton Mill Born, Twynholm, KDB

Very interesting as you say. Perhaps one could follow up the young John and David. There should be a death certificate for Margaret if this is the right one.
