Hi Paul - why not post up the full details you have found on the 1881? Then someone can find them in another census for you and maybe it will shed light on the birthplace.

It reads like SCERBECK so I would say that it's SKIRBECK - very probably the census enumerator in Yorkshire had never heard of the place and wrote what he thought!

This could be the family in 1871 at SKIRBECK - perhaps John married twice?

John CANT 30 boatman b.Skirbeck Lincs
wife E....ah?? Emah? (Emma?)29 b.Crosby Lincs
Frederick son 5 b.Hundleby?? Lincs
Annie dau 2 b.Skirbeck
John son 1 b.Skirbeck
Sarah MACKFALL wife's sister 11 nursemaid b.Crosby

Well there you go - that worked didn't it?  :D

The family in 1891 - posting the image as it's a little tricky.

Hi Paul,
I'm with Casalguidi on this one, in that I think it's the same family in 1871 (with different wife). Just to clarify, I had a look at the 1881 images and discovered that Frances R Fitzhugh, although listed as son, was not a Cant as per the transcription. This would indicate to me that he was Mary's son by a previous relationship. Take a look at the sections of image for yourself.

Also - Annie in 1871 age 2 could easily be Hannah in 1881 age 13. The two names are often interchangeable.

Anyway, hope the image helps a bit - good luck!
