What do i do next?
« on: Friday 26 November 04 20:58 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for information on Benjamin Crawforth, who lived at Flinton Grange, Flinton, E.R.Yorks.

I have him on the 1861,71,81,91,01 census. He lived there on all these. He was also a wesleyan preacher belonging to the hornsea circuit. I have been trying to find out what happened to the farm when he died in may 1915.

I have searched online and at the archives in Beverley. There is no reference for a will, there is no records at the methodists. By 1930 ish the farm was no longer in the family.

He was also burried at a C of E church? Don't know or understand why.

Has anyone any more suggestions that i can try to find any info on him/the farm.

Best wishes

Have you tried Tithe records?  I don't know the coverage/procedure for your area but the following National Archives leaflet may help for those held there:

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/researchguidesindex.asp

Early electoral registers/poll books should tell why he was entitled to vote - ie held property - if he was.

Local newspapers for an obituary?

i have searched the national archives online under his name/farm and nothing came up.  He was a land owner. His farm was 163 acres , and i know when he died and have his burial records but have not sent for certificate yet.
Think i'm going to have to wait till after xmas now before i send for more.

Thankyou for your help

National Archives Ref:
Tithe Apportionments:
Flinton, Humbleton ref:  IR 29/41/71
Three days notice required for production of documents - no indication of date coverage in index though - you would have to contact them.

By far the majority of the records at the national archives aren't online or indexed.

You say there wasn't any will - have you searched the national probate/administratin indexes at First Avenue House, Holborn, London from 1915 until the 1930s or later for the surname.  It could possibly be that administration wasn't granted until the family moved from the property or the death of another family member.  Compared to most other hand-on research, this is an easy job!

I would still try the local newspapers for an obituary - even if you have his death/burial details.  It would appear that he was a longstanding (possibly respected too?)member of the community and obituaries of longstanding/prominent members of the community in those days are often quite lengthy - more like potted biographies.

Hope this helps somewhat

Thankyou for your reply.

I will look into those records. His son, who i presume the farm would have gone to, wasn't in the burial indexes for flinton ( upto 1985). So he must have left the farm.
The will is not in the probate records at Beverley.

Don't know if its just me, but i'd like to find out about what happened to the farm. Doing just a "tree" , is not enough for me. I like to know everything.

Thankyou for all your help
