Lawlors of Hacketstown.
« on: Saturday 17 March 07 16:52 GMT (UK) »
Is there a kind person in the above area who would be willing to do a look up for me please?  I am seeking a birth/baptism for a William Lawlor B1849.  His father was James ( a shoemaker) but I do not have the mothers name. He married a Mary Coogan in 1870 and gave his address as Hacketstown.  I found him and his family on the 1901 and 1911 Dublin census to where they had moved.  I was lucky enough to find his wifes (my G.Gran's) birth place in Co. Wicklow but where oh where did William come from in Carlow??????   As I do not live in Ireland, it is difficult for me Thank you, Bridget x

Hi Bridget,

Have you managed to find the info that you needed on William Lawlor? I will hopefully be examining the Hacketstown records in the National Library in Dublin sometime in early August, so I may be able to find it then - if you haven't already got it.

Hi Jud,
Sadly I have got no further in my search for g. grandfather William Lawlor. Irish records are so difficult to follow up when you don’t live in the country. I really could do with visiting the National Library in Dublin but a visit to Ireland is not on the cards at the moment!  I really do appreciate your very kind offer and I am grabbing at it with both hands. The information I have given on the board is all I have. Again, thanks a million for your very kind offer and good luck with your own research if and when you visit the N.L.      Kindest Regards,  Bridget

Bridget,

I checked the Hacketstown records but I didn't find any William Lawlor around 1849. There were Lawlors in other years, but surprisingly few. However, I should point out that my search was a bit rushed and this doesn't necessarily mean that he is not there.

Hi Jud,   Forgive me, I am having a "Senior Moment" and am bothered that I may not have thanked you for having a look for the info. on my elusive Lawlor!  Just in case I have not thanked you I am doing so now.  You are indeed most kind for trying.  Thanks a million.  Bridget x

You're very welcome, Bridget - it's just a pity that I didn't find anything!

thnx for posting this....I live in Armagh and have made a couple of visits to GRO Dublin...was able to do a search for €2,and get copies of certs for €4.
However, the second time I went(9th Oct 2012)I had a list of 48 names, which I wished to explore, and either add to my family tree or discard them.
I nearly died when told that the only information I could get from the books, was the same as I got from the FamilySearch site, and the only way I could get any further info. was to purchase certs for all the names!!..almost €200!!(and quite a lot probably don't belong to us!)
It was very good to see that I can search in the National Library of Ireland.
All I need to know now,is:-1. Are there any charges to search?  2. Is there a time limit on searches? 3. Are searches online or in books? 4. Where is the Library?!
