XTOPHERI ?
« on: Tuesday 20 March 07 11:34 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone shed any light on the origin of this first name please-Xtopheri? I found it while researching late 1600-early 1700 relatives. Other first names in the family around that time include a Radolphus and Johannes.
Thanks Maggie

I have found this used as an abbreviation for Christopher.

Wearsider is correct, it's an abbreviation for Christopher.  Rather like the "X" in "Xmas" is an abbreviation for Christ-Mas.

I think Radolphus is Ralph, and Johannes is John.  Not 100% sure though.

Lucky you, getting back to 1700!

Hi Maggie,

As someone who got stuck in the early 1800's...how did you manage to get back to the 1700's?  Was it via Parish Records? (Do tell:-)

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I'd never have thought of Christopher in a million years! I'd begun to wonder if there was a foreign branch to the family!
Sadly my links to the early 1700s are very suspect, though I do have definite links through parish records to the 1750-1760s in Berwickshire (SPENCE)and North Yorkshire(REED).
Thanks again, Maggie.
