Confusion!?
« on: Thursday 22 March 07 11:11 GMT (UK) »
I had found my 6th Gt Grandfather a while ago and only recently have i discovered that he was born in Anstey in Leicestershire. He was called JONATHAN LEWIN and married SARAH BEAL at Leighton Bromswold in HUNTS. There they had all of their children and they and most of the children are buried at Leighton Bromswold.

My confusion is with the inscription on JONATHAN and SARAHs gravestones, both of them say 'Of Clapton'. I have no idea why this would be inscribed as as far as i know he was born in ANSTEY, LEIC and he and Sarah married and resided in Leighton Bromswold in HUNTS.

Does anyone know why this would be or have any similar confusion??

Are you sure it wasn't "Clopton" which is four miles down the road from LB?

It could be.
But 2 generations later a JONATHAN LEWIN is born in BRINGTON (the grandson of the Jonathan i have mentioned) and on the census' he and his wife EMMA MATTS both say they are born CLAPTON (Nth) !! Im confused!!

Brington is a mile west of LB and 3 miles south of Clopton (which is in Northants). I suggest that Clapton (Nth) is actually Clopton Northants, not North Clapton!

Hi David

Just to say that Clopton was known as you so rightly say as
Clapton in the early years and vice versa over here in our County of Northants.  :)
