No , I think WILLIAM MESSHAM,  was her father......her brother was called Samuel (age 8 , living with stepfather 1901 )

WILLIAM  was 28 when he died , the same age as Mary Cs, mother , Mary Ann , who married Richard Jenkins , later the same year........

Gets confusing doen't it ?

Oh!! Extremely confusing

I didn't even mean to write Mary C either, I meant Mary. Heh. I see what you mean. I definitely think that's right. And I now feel like I'm actually getting somewhere with the Messham's- even if it is just 6 individuals. :)

I've just quickly scoured Familysearch. There are 2 William Messham's, this one is more probable with the Link to Samuel although it says Mold, and spelt Mesham;

Samuel Mesham - Head - 46 - Mold - Coal Miner
Mary - Wife - 44 - Mold - Coal Miner's Wife
Ralph - Son -  21 - Mold - Coal Miner
Samuel - Son - 17
Sarah - Daur - 14
Jane - Daur - 13
WILLIAM - Son - 9
Catherine - Daur - 7

There's another though, But I think that's the most likely...
Flintshire - Hughes, Price, Simon, Messham, Griffiths, Powell, Tattum, Eaton, Roberts, Pownall, James, Enion
Denbighshire - Morris
Cheshire - Walley, Hough, Pridden, Jackson, Lawson, Rosedale, Rigby
Lancashire - Smith, Caunce, Williams, Eaton, Watkinson, As(h)croft, Wilson
Cumbria - Twentyman, Borrow, Bownas, Mitchell
London - Liddell, Wilkes, Hart
Midlands - Smith, Fox, Hopton, Timson

I just found this thread, so I don't know if you are still looking for these Messhams. If you are we have quite a bit on them. Samuel (born 31 July 1836) was the son of Ralph Messham (1797) and Elizabeth Hughes. Both Samuel and Ralph were born in Hawarden (I know Samuel says Mold in the 1881, but he says Hawarden in the earlier Censuses). You may have trouble finding them in some of the censuses - on Ancestry.co.uk Samuel is transcribed in the 1871 as 'Sasabel Mepham', and his brother Ralph is also down as Mepham, while his father is 'Ralph Micham'!!!
We have a further 3 generations of Messhams going back before Ralph - Edward (1758), Ralph (1728) and William, along with their families. Our line descends from Edward's youngest son, Joseph.
If you are interested in the info we have, plese let me know.
Best wishes,
Richard

Hi Rick......

And welcome to Rootschat.

Don't knw if it is any help to you, but Ralph Messham was baptised on January 12th 1728. His father was William , and their abode was Ewloe........

William Messham married Ellin Lowe, November 12th 1726.

I have the Parish Registers (not all ) 1697-1820 If I can help in the future, please ask...

Regards

Thanks Jeannie,
We looked up the PRs a few years ago, so we have got those dates, but we have got William down as marrying Catherine Edwards, not Ellin Lowe... have we mistranscribed it?
Richard

Thanks Richard & Jeannie, I've just sent you a personal message. I'm impressed by how far back you've got!  I only got to about 1820. I'd love any extra information I can get.

Hi,I have just found this thread! hope there is someone still logged in to it!
My Grandmother is/was the Bertha Messham mentioned in this thread.
She married George William Skelton about 1912, in Co.Durham.
My Father told me of  William Henry Messham, he called him ,'Uncle', but not sure if he was a brother , or, was actually a cousin Of Bertha.
I do know he was sent to Canada from some sort of institute or home....
returning later with as my dad described " a roll of notes"so must have made a good living out there!
