What job was this ?
« on: Sunday 25 March 07 19:49 BST (UK) »
In the 1891 census my 2x Great Grand Aunt Harriet Guckes was living with her family and brother in law at 2 Sander Street, St George in the East. This I know. What I can't work out is her occupation. Can anyone read it and if you can what does it mean ?

Hello Willis

Could it possibly be "Caretaker of Club"

Best wishes

Thank you for that. I have been looking at that for so long and not seen it. A fresh pair of eyes works wonders.
Now all I need to do is find out which club. Any thoughts ?

I can't think what kind of a club would employ a woman as a caretaker in 1891.  I wonder if she was a cleaner and thought caretaker sounded better!

You may well be right. It certainly was a different world for women back then.
