What is this name? - Completed
« on: Friday 30 March 07 20:22 BST (UK) »
I am currently preparing the Colchester entry for 1848 from White's Directory and have come across a shortened version of a name which I cannot identify. It is probably biblical. Any suggestions?

This is how it appears in the directory:

Temps. Biggs

Emma and Malcolm,

Both on the nail, thank you.

I just love the idea of a publican having the name of Temperance. :D

The Berechurch Arms ( which is now called the Huntsmans Tavern ) is on Shrub End Road and so could never have been in Lexden. Are we sure it is the same place ?

Willis,

Thanks for your comment. I've checked the directory again and I missed off some information on my original question (silly me). The entry stated Berechurch Arms, Lexden. So it seems the same person. Perhaps the boundary has been changed or there was an error in the directory. Anyway, I am satisfied with the first name of the person.

Thanks again.

It seems that even in 1851 as now everyone wants a Lexden address.
