Hi
Can anyone help to find the above.I have so few details.All I know is he was a scalecutter whatever that was!He was listed as alive at son John Stenton's marriage at Rotherham Parish Church 1849

When was John born?
he may have been with father in 1841?

Don't know what a scalecutter did
There is an occupation "Scaleraker"-one employed by the parish to clean the streets

I'm afraid I dont know that either.If he married 1849 and was about 20,his birth date would be roughly1829.

Who did John marry -maybe we can get his date and p.o.b. from 1851 census?

John married Harriet Barker and gives his age as 21 so1828 when he was born.Residence at marriage just says Tinsley for them both.Witness's were Maria and Joseph Taylor.

Scales are the decorative side panels of knives, especially pen-knives. Scale cutting and scale pressing were very common occupations in the Sheffield area. The following link (which I think I found on this site) has excellent information about scales:
