Help please!! Microfiche ref numbers - what do they mean???
« on: Friday 05 March 04 22:53 GMT (UK) »
I've just got a Stepney 1851 census index on fiche, from ebay.

I've dug my fiche reader out to have a look and can't make head nor tale out of it. I haven't had an awful lot of experience with fiche for census.

eg. I found Bastow  1 - 307v. What does it mean, how do I check it on the 1851 census.

Any advice gratefully received!!

Sounds like folio numbers.  You should have more information than that.  You need the P.R.O. bundle number.

Your reference will look something like this.

PRO bundle HO 107/XXXX folio XXX  pageXXX

It may be folio 307.  It would be rather a lot of pages to check if you have to look at all 307 folios.  If this is an index from The East of London FHS then it should give an actual folio number

Thanks for replying.

I think there should be something else with it.

All I have are 2 fiche there is a street index at the beginning but that doesn't seem to help with the numbers next to the names.

I'm going to a fair at Brentwood tomorrow. I'm hoping somebody there can help. From what I have to go on it's no help at all to search the census.

Cheers Diane

The East of London FHS would I think be the best place to look if they have a stall there.  I think they did the original index.  You could look at www.eolfhs.org  (I think thats right, it's definately eolfhs) to see if there are any clues.
