Mitcham Street Paddington??
« on: Monday 02 April 07 09:48 BST (UK) »
Hi

Trying to find out if Mitcham Street in Paddington still exists.  I have looked on a couple of online maps but not all the streets are named.  Since the reference that I have for this address was back in the 1850's I would not be surprised if it has since been obliterated or renamed.

Can anyone help??

Cheers

I do have a couple of Godfrey maps of the area and will have a look for you - but it could well have gone in the 1960s when housing was re-developed and of course the M4 motorway extension came right along Harrow Road and flew over Paddington Green.

Me again  ;)

I have checked the MOTCO CD-Rom and can find no trace of a Mitcham Street in Paddington.  There are of course Mitcham Road, Lane, Place etc - but they are across London in Mitcham (which was Surrey back then anyway  ???

Hi SM

Can't say that I'm really surprised at that result - but I did hope.  Many thanks for taking the time to look for me, your efforts are very much appreciated.

With thanks

Hi Karenlee,
There is a Mitcham St, off Lisson St, Marylebone. This is listed in the 1841 street index.

Lisson St is near the border between Paddington and Marylebone.
On a modern A to Z map of London, look for Lisson Grove, Lisson St would have been just to the left.

Cissellby.
Hopcroft. Aldridge. Hepton. Howard. Adolpho.
Westminster. Marylebone. Kensington. Paddington.

Many many thanks to you for that information.  I now have a much better idea of where the family were for many years.  They had grocer and china shops in this area for a long time.

Cheers

The reason I picked up on this thread was because the name somehow seemed familar  ???

I used to get of the bus at Paddington Green and then walk to my school which was located in Lisson Grove, St Marylebone.

By the way the map I checked was for 1862.

Hi am old thread I know but I was born in Mitcham Street Paddington in 1948. I have a copy of an old map showing it between Lisson Street and Stafford Street.
