1841 census for the Ludford area (nr. Ludlow)
« on: Monday 29 November 04 16:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Can anybody help me locate on the 1841 census:

Richard Humphreys/ries  and his wife Mary
There should also be a son aged about 5 called Richard.

Son Richard was born in Ludford.

If anybody could locate these for me it would end a 4 year search.

Many thanks,

Linda  :'(

Hi Linda,

A visit to Ludlow library and a check of the Ludford 1841 fiche revealed::

Edward Humphries aged 25, Agricultural labourer
Mary Humphries aged 20

living in a cottage in the vicinity of Steventon Farm.

Ref: HO 107/912/19 page 9

Hope this may be of some help.

John

Thanks John,

Although it's not Richard maybe Edward is related.

Again many thanks for putting yourself out.

Merry Christmas,

Linda     :)

Sorry the info wasn't what you wanted.

Hello John,

Thank you for your kind offer.
I'm not sure what the Ludlow library carries.

If you think they carry the Stoke st. Milborough census for 1841, would you be so kind as to see if Richard & Mary together with son Richard (aged approx. 5) are living there when you next pay a visit.

In 1851 Richard jnr was an apprentice living in Stoke St. Milborough.

Many thanks again,

Linda :)

Hi Linda (the search goes on)

I’ve checked Stoke St. Milb. census for 1841 & regret no Richard, Mary & Richard.

For your information I found:

Thos. Humphry, his wife Elizth. & family

John & Sarah Humphry

Margaret Humphries living with John Jones & wife Jane.

I’ve made a note of the additional census details and if you want them just let me know.

I also checked the 1851 just to make sure I wasn’t going blind and indeed found Richard Humphries aged 15 Blacksmiths apprentice. Place of birth was given as Herefordshire, and at first glance it is Ludford, but the original appears to have been spelt Ledford?

Interesting that apprentice Richard is living with a John Jones, albeit his wife is listed as Mary – always funny coincidences to annoy!

I’ve had to do some serious searching for Ludlow and surrounding areas with my own tree and can confirm that there are a fair few Humphries of varying spellings. A Richard (shoemaker), Mary & family (no son called Richard) are listed for example as living in Corve Street, Ludlow in the 1851 census. If you want me to make a note of any I come across, please let me know.

I may make one more visit to the library next week, so if you need anything checking urgently, pls let me know asap.

All the best
John

Dear John,

Thank you for all the work you are doing for me!

I am at a loss as to where to search next.

I have found Richards birth in Ludford in 1835 on the IGI, so that was my first port of call. I have the 1851 census for Shropshire and have not, so far, found his parents. I was hoping that an earlier census might reveal their whereabouts.

I guess I'll have to wait for the 1841 to be indexed.
Of course they could always be over the border in Herefordshire.....or indeed in another country.....Wales.

Many thanks again, and if you want anything looking up in the 1851 census please say. The only thing I have to stress is that I do not have any indexes, street or name, so really am limited to villages.

Merry christmas,

Linda
