Disk cleanup
« on: Wednesday 04 April 07 17:27 BST (UK) »
For around 18 months now on my temporary internet files on Disk cleanup. Now using 168,394k of space.I have been unsure if i should delete them or not, because i wasn't sure if they were internet web addresses visited or not. However i have now opened 3 of 16 files, they all say the same.

Internet Explorer
This page has an unspecified potential security flaw
would you like to continue? (I presume that means deleting them) The last file is
Type of file Data unknown application, created 29th Oct 2005.
Oct/November was when the computer was cleaned out and reinstalled.I have a suspicion that they might be the download files used when reinstalling the P.c is it safe to delete them?

If in doubt Celia, I would get hold of a program called CCleaner.  It will clear out all your old junk, not just temporary internet files.  Get it from here:

http://www.ccleaner.com/

The one thing you need to do is preserve certain cookies.  After you have installed the program click on Options and then the Cookies button and add the cookies you want to keep e.g. rootschat.com and GenesReunited.co.uk and others.

This program is much better than Windows Cleanup.  You can fix Registry errors as well by clicking on the Issues button.  It makes a backup before making any changes to your Registry.

CCleaner is a great program.

I'd just like to point out that it comes in 3 flavours - Standard (with the Yahoo! toolbar), Basic (no toolbar) and Slim (English only, no toolbar).
To find the choices - click on download and then select "other builds".

Cookies are small text files that contain information, such as your user name and password on rootschat.com .

I'm not sure what treebeard is talking about.  CCleaner is a stand-alone program and does not attach itself to any toolbar as far as I know.  It puts an icon on your desktop and you run it whenever you want to do a tidy-up of your disk.

CCleaner is recommended by experts and computer geeks.  :)

Hi Celia

Windows Disk Cleanup does not remove cookies.  It also compresses unused temporary files rather than remove them.   It does not empty the Recycle bin by default.

CCleaner removes tons of unused stuff.  Some cookies are important like rootschat.com and GenesReunited.co.uk but if you do accidently delete them it means that you will have to recreate them by logging-on and entering your password at the 2 sites I mentioned.  You do not need to store webpages as they constantly change and get replaced anyway.  As soon as you open a webpage it downloads all the objects needed to view the page. Temporary Internet Files as the name suggests means that the webpages are only needed for a short time.  They can easily be discarded and replaced.

Go for it.  CCleaner will not delete any critical files that you require

Sorry for any confusion caused by my earlier post.  My point was that the Standard version of CCleaner has the Yahoo! toolbar included with it - and not that CCleaner is part of the Yahoo! toolbar.  Installing the toolbar is optional but those who didn't want it were annoyed at having to download a much larger file so the writers made builds available without the toolbar - Basic and Slim.

Treebeard

There is only one version of CCleaner (free version).

Please supply a link to where you have found different versions of CCleaner.

I cannot find any information about it being incorporated into a Yahoo toolbar.  Perhaps that has something to do with Yahoo rather than CCleaner?
