David Haig to Boston in 1901
« on: Saturday 07 April 07 00:07 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find my husband's great granduncle in 1901 on the way to the US?

I'm totally new to tracing ancestors in the US and would be grateful to anyone who can help me find out more about him.

Here's what I already know/have found out tonight!

David Alexander Haig born Mar 1877 in Peebles Scotland.

1920 he is aboard SS Lapland arriving at Ellis Island as a 2nd Class passenger. On the passenger list he is listed as naturalized in Sept 1908 @ Somerset Superior Court. His address at this time is 117 Everett Ave, Providence, Rhode Island.

In 1913 his brother Lewis arrived on the California at Ellis Island to visit his brother (then living at 75 Everett Ave, Providence, Rhode Island.) This is interesting as Lewis eventually married and settled in South Africa.

I think I may have found David arriving in Boston in 1901 on find mypast but don't really want to pay our for credits unless it's my only option. Is there anywhere else I can access the information?

Is there any way of finding anymore information about David online? (I am in the UK)

Thanks for any help or advice!

OH WOW!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks you so much - you have given me information I didn't have about his daughter and wife.

I've just shown your reply to hubby who is speechless at your help. He noticed that you have family from Lancashire where we live! If I can ever do a look up (or several) for you at Lancashire Records Office please just ask!!!!

Thanks again

Just had more thoughts

  • does the census tell you what David did for a living?
  • Can I presume his wife was american?
  • Does he just have the one child?

Sorry to ask for more!

David A. Haig married Sarah L. Jewett on 9/14/1904 in Skowhegan, Maine.  He was noted as a woolen designer or manufacturer on available census and directories.

Thanks for that - it makes sense that he was a woolen manufacturer as his family back in Scotland were involved with the woolen mills in the Peebles area.

Thanks for your help!

Here are a couple of photos I have of the man himself! The first was taken in 1961, I'm not sure about the second.
