Faked his own death???
« on: Wednesday 11 April 07 22:40 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with this sorry tale?

Letters sent to his brother several years later, seem to indicate that my ancestor, William Sanderson Forbes b.Manchester 1855, had to leave the country in 1894 to escape criminal proceedings. The letters imply that his sudden unexplained disappearance was an attempt to avoid capital punishment for committing criminal acts against his employer. William is listed as a Clerk on 1871 and 1881 Census, but 1891 shows him as Brewer(?)/Traveller, living at 59,Harper St., Salford.
Can anyone supply his last employers Name and Address on 1891 (I haven't got Ancestry membership).
Also, does anyone know how I could access  Manchester/Salford newspaper records for 1894, to check whether any stories reflect the above circumstances?

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks for the link, Pegasuss - I didn't realise there were so many covering Salford/Mcr events!! Unfortunately I can't easily visit Mcr Archives as I live in Cornwall.
I was hoping someone could check the 1891 Census to see if his employers details were listed, which might narrow things down a bit.

And the census says Stretford, not Salford.

What precisely could the criminal acts against his employer have been?

'In 1861, the Criminal Law Consolidation Act (24 & 25 Vict; c. 94 - c. 100) further reduced the number of capital crimes to four: murder, treason, arson in royal dockyards, and piracy with violence. The death penalty was mandatory for treason and murder, although subject to the Royal Prerogative of Mercy (i.e. the government could commute death sentences).'

The only reason he could therefore have been facing the prospect of capital punishment would be if he had murdered his employer. It would have to be one criminal act not criminal acts, unless of course he murdered more than one member of his employer's family or another employee for instance?

Regards

Valda

Thanks Pegasuss.

Thanks for the lookup, Gardener - I must have mistranscribed Salford for Stretford on the 1891 when I was scribbling it all down at the Library!! Shame it doesn't show the employer though.
