??1861 census puzzle...............
« on: Thursday 12 April 07 20:11 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Tinney family from Plymouth.

To start with can find no record of Jessie Tinney's birth.
She was my Great Grandmother, born 1862, Moricetown, Devon, parents Peter Tinney and Mary Ann Williams.  Found her marriage and am sending for a certificate but no birth.

Another puzzle her brother Alfred Peter married Alice Curtis and according to the 1861 census she had a sister called Sophia age 4 both daughters to Mary Curtis age 77???????????I've treble checked. Now there is also a niece Sophia age 40 gather she is the mother and the census has made abit of a mistake.  At least I hope so.

Can somebody check a birth for Jessie, I may of just missed the entry.

Any help or information on this family would be appreciated.

Another question. Looking into the 1871 census and see that Alice age 11 is a passenger, but what does "Passenger In Ganges " mean?

Hi Helena

I wonder if this could be her birth mistranscribed as Tinkey

Yes, Joe !

Looking at the index image it's Tinney  :)

Could you post the census references for Curtis family you are referring to, Helina?

She's on board the "Ganges" on census night.  It is a training ship for boys and an odd place for an 11 year old girl. (see enumerator's comments for that census district)

There are 2 other Curtis on board.

Edward 16 "boy 2nd class" b. Birkenhead, Lancs
Samuel 51, married, Boatswain 1 class, Barnstaple, Devon

Perhaps she is related to one of them.

In 1861 Sophia is described as "Wife of warrant officer".

Is a boatswain 1st class a Warrant officer?

Several of the children on board do seem to be related to officers on board.

(just so you have the full info, John Curtis is apparently on another vessel, the "Liberty Tender", but is in the same listing)
