St Phillips, Manchester, location????
« on: Tuesday 30 November 04 18:40 GMT (UK) »
Am looking for the location, as in what part of Manchester, is St Phillips Church?  I know its on Bradford Rd -  Also, could you tell me what streets are around Cobden St?  I have baptisim records for grandparents in St Phillips and I know the family lived at 180 Cobden St in Manchester in 1880-85 -  Trying to get a feel for what part of Manchester these places are -  Thanks very, very much for the help      -  Fran

Hi,

I came across this link for Cobden Street, Ancoats, Manchster. It has a nice picture for you.

http://www.manchester.gov.uk/libraries/lsuimage/streetview/cobden.htm

there is a Bradford street in the area, but I can't find a reference to the Church, perhaps someone else can shed some light for you.

Thanks for the link -  I'm just trying to get as much info as I can on where the family lived -  St Phillips was still on Bradford Rd in 1950 but I realize that was long ago so it may no longer be there -  At that time we were able to get copies from the church of baptisims of family members -  I appreciate the help and the effort you all put forth -  thanks,   Fran

Hi Fran'

Ancoats Area is on the boarder of Miles Platting, & Bradford.
The North side of Manchester

St Philips Church was actually on Ridgeway Street, and the corner of Halmore Street , DaviesStreet  was across from St.Philips Church.

The streets around that area.
Bradford Rd run parallel with Ridgeway Street. Butler Street  met Bradford Road,  Sandal Street.

There was the Bradford Road Gas works, and the new Manchester City Stadium is built  facing Philip's Park Cemetery on Hulme Hall Lane. probably where your ancestors could be buried, Philip's Park Cemetery opened in
1870s, Ancoats Hospital was on Mill Street. which continued on to Bradford Road

In the 1850/60 There were 9 beerhouses on Ridgeway Street. and on Braford Road began to be built up in the 1840s and 1850s.
There is a book called The Old pubs of Ancoats, by Neil Richardson which you can buy from Manchester Family History Society.

This site www.haveyoursay.freeserve.co.uk is about Ancoats. & Miles Platting.

Many, many thanks  ;D  I am very grateful for the help -  I'm sorry their church is no longer there -  Would you know where the old parish records are now kept?  My uncle had corresponded with the church in 1950 and the Bradford Rd address is what was on the letters and certificates we recevied.  Its nice to be able to place the location now and include it in the family files -  Thanks again -  Have a good day!    Fran
