BATES - Army lookup please
« on: Thursday 31 August 06 12:31 BST (UK) »
Is it possible to get more information about a relative who served in the armed forces?

I've got a "George Garside BATES" who gave his occupation as "Sapper - 2191747 R.E." on his marriage certificate.

Thanks

~ Claire

Erm...

Well George was getting married in 1943, and I've also got a news clipping that says,

July 17 1942

"There are 4 brothers in the Bates family and they are all serving in the Forces.  Their father Mr Geo. W. Bates licensee of the Forrester's Call, Old Street, Ashton was badly gassed in Flanders in the last war and came home a physical wreck.  The outbreak of the present war found Alfred (34), Eric (25) already in the army.  The younger boys George (23) and Jack (20) volunteered for service"

I know he was from the pub and he died on 31/12/1946 which of course ended his landlordship.

Is there any way to find out more about where they served or anything?

Thank you

I'm looking to find more information on my grandfather.  I know he was in WW2 and was a "sapper" in the Cheshire Regiment - I've got his service number.

Does anyone know of anywhere I can get some information about his service?

Many thanks

Hi
A sapper is a rank you would find in the Royal Engineers, not the Cheshire Regiment,

If you have any info can you post it here, this way we can have a look. And someone may be able to help you.
