Parish Registers on microfiche
« on: Monday 23 April 07 17:19 BST (UK) »
Are transcripts or copies of any Hertforshire parish registers available to purchase?

If so, from where?

Have tried Herts FHS and HALS without success.

Thanks

Hi Dawn

Sadly I believe the answer is that there are no PRs available for Herts on microfiche only microfilm. When the registers were deposited at HALS they were copied onto film and I believe that HALS has no plans to make them available on fiche.  Microfilm of the PRs are available for sale from HALS.

As for transcripts.  It is possible that individuals may have transcribed portions of registers but I am not aware of any that are commercially available.

Coverage of Herts PRs on the BVRI is quite good however, but it is obviously incomplete.

Hi Rick

Just as I thought but your message prompted me to phone again and for info...

each film costs about £40 and may contain more than 1 parish, they can't extract just what you want.

Also there is a long lead time as the job is sent away for processing.

But I was informed that the parish I'm interested in has a local history group and they have done a lot of transcriptions, so I'll post that website under resources.

Dawn

Having records on film is not as convenient as fiche.  Not least because film viewers tend to be much bigger and are therefore not so easy to have at home.

Thanks for the link Dawn.

Kind Regards
Rick :)

Out of interest, which parish are you particularly looking at?

Hi Nigel

Pirton to start with, but I looked at the database on the local history group site and got what I wanted until I can get to HALS to double check.

Well, I'm off there on Saturday morning. If you give me the details for your search, I'll try to have a look.
Cheers

Hi Nigel

Thanks for the HALS offer but at the moment I've managed to find what I needed from the pr's through the transcriptions on the Pirton database.
